Masaba Gupta is a popular name in the Indian fashion industry. She unveiled her first collection at the young age of 19 at the 'Lakme Fashion Week', after which there was no looking back for the young designer.

She has worked with many popular faces in Bollywood and her graph sees no lows. The designer will be in the city to showcase her latest festive line today at 'The Shangrila Hotel'.

In a chat with Surupasree Sarmmah, Masaba talks about her inspiration, challenges and experience as a designer.

Why a fashion designer?

I was into a lot of other things like sports, music and dance. However, I finally chose fashion as something I would want to do on the long run. I really enjoyed my days at fashion school and next thing I know, I am participating in fashion weeks.

If not a designer....

I would probably have
been in the marketing or advertising world.

What is the best and the most challenging part of being a designer?

There are many good things about this profession. It is a creatively satisfying job where I get to put my vision into clothing and see it come to life. Other than that, I get to dress up different kinds of people.

However, the most challenging part is the business side of it. Fashion designers are not known to be good at business, so I am trying to get that sorted. My idea is to strike a balance in my profession.

Who is that one person you would like to work with?

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is somebody Ihaven't worked with so far. So I would like to work with her.

Your style of work?

My work is fresh and very individual. It has inspires young energy and is meant for girls, who want to experiment with the way they dress and carry themselves.
One will notice that my work is hugely inspired by Indian prints, mythology and old scriptures in a modern context.

Who inspires you?

My all-time inspiration is my mother, from whom, I have got my design abilities. She has pushed me into becoming a better designer.

Other than her, I am hugely inspired by Wendell Rodricks and Anamika Khanna. I look to them for pointers on how I need to conduct myself as a designer and handle
my label.

Something about yourself that the world doesn't know...

That my creative capacity is only for about two hours a day. The rest of the day I am just trying to get work done (laughs).

If you are trapped in an island, the three things you would have with you?

It is definately going to be some water, my books and probably my sketch pad.

Does your work reflect your personal fashion taste?

It does; my collections are always subtle. I mostly wear black, white and neutral colours. On the other hand, I always wear a darker shade of lipstick. So my collection revolves around this.

What is the exhibition about?

We do this exhibition every year with 'The Bombay Attic'. This time we are working with Kulsum Shadab, who is with the Hothur Foundation. She works with acid attack victims. I will also showcase my latest festive collection in the city while we support
the cause.

And the latest collection is...
It is called the 'Masaba print' and is primarily for solemn occasions. I have kept a very affordable range in mind, which can be worn for festivals or weddings. I have concentrated on 'rani pink', yellow, blue, bright purple and red.

A few words for aspiring designers...

Always keep it real and original. Doing your research before venturing out is always of great help. And never steal anybody's ideas.
