Costume designing requires you to build things from scratch, whereas styling is all about curating and achieving a certain look," says Poornamrita Singh, who, along with designer Arjun Bhasin have designed costumes for Katrina Kaif starrer Baar Baar Dekho.

It was a fortunate stroke of serendipity that led Singh to discover her aptitude for costume designing.

"While working at the production house, Genesis, I was put in charge of styling TV commercials quite a few times. It was during this stint I discovered my flare for the craft, and developed a keen in interest," she tells Metrolife.

"This is when I got in touch with Arjun, and he is the one who has taught me everything. And working alongside him for this film made it all the more special," she adds.

As the plot of Baar Baar Dekho treads the territory of time travel, Singh says she had to "research historical styles".

"We had to look closely at fashion from the Edwardian era - such as high collars and big cuffs, and modernise it with hints of Japanese fashion. We combined this with modern and futuristic accessories and fabric such as neoprene, leather and textured garments. I also had to create colour palettes to represent different eras," says Singh who has also worked on projects like Ang Lee's Life Of Pi, Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited, Mira Nair's The Reluctant Fundamentalist and Zoya Akhtar's Dil Dhadakne Do.

Sharing her experience of designing for the leading actors of the film, Singh says, "Katrina was very open to trying out new looks for her character and was quite involved in the process which made it fun to work with her. So we made a good team," she says.

Her mantra for surviving in the competitive industry is to be "focused on what you do and give it all you have".
