Shikha Nambiar started her professional life as a corporate lawyer in Pune. She worked there for three years before she moved to the city and gave a thought to pursuing what she was passionate about. Being inclined towards all forms of art since childhood, it was an obvious choice for her to be a professional illustrator. Apart from illustrations, her forte lies in hand-lettering and typography, in which she doesn't mind investing each day of her life.
Her Facebook page 'Sunny Skies Starry Eyes' reflects exactly what she is good at. "It was just last year that I thought of starting a space where I can showcase my thoughts and imagination. I have been into drawing and art since I was a child, and I realised that's my strength. I finally decided to follow my dreams and find expression through illustration," says Shikha.
Most of her illustrations are inspired by her travel diaries, culinary explorations, her surroundings and the kind of music she listens to. Shikha can often be spotted with her sketch book, deeply engrossed in portraying life through art. And not just illustrations, she is also good at doodling and trying out different forms of art and craft. "When I started, acrylic was something I often used, but as time passed, I got more interested in illustrating using water colour and colour pencils. I love the way they merge with one another, giving the exact feel I want," she adds.
Though she has never exhibited her creations, she has put them up for sale at various flea markets, receiving encouraging responses from art enthusiasts. Shikha constantly looks up to writer and painter Amruta Patil and wants to bring out a book of her recent project — '100daysofbangalorebychica' — an ode to the city. "My most popular products are fridge magnets and it is good to see people coming up to me with ideas that they want me to illustrate. Most people want something related to Bengaluru," says Shikha. Engraving her city through art and presenting it to people is something she is proud of.
Notebooks, bookmarks, magnetic photo frames, postcards, greeting cards, hand-printed canvas, mugs and coasters are a few things she spells her magic on. Giving life to one's surroundings is a talent not many are blessed with and Shikha happens to be one of those fortunate few. In the long run, she wants to build her brand further by launching the products on e-commerce websites. She also wishes to work on a book of her illustrations.
"I am very thankful to my husband who has been my greatest support. He has encouraged me at every step that I have taken to transform my passion into a reality," she adds.
