The much-awaited Bengaluru Comic Con 2016 is here and it's that time of year when characters, iconic and obscure, come alive from the pages.

Many avid comic enthusiasts have been busy planning — some for weeks, some others for months — about which of their favourite characters they want to attend the event as.

In comic enthusiast Ramprakash Lakshminarayan's friends circle, this has been a topic of discussion for the past six months. "But I finalised who I would go as only a month ago," says the content writer, who has spent a few days putting together a cat and red cape for magician Mandrake, who shares a creator with the better-known Phantom. "This apart, he wears a black suit, which I already had."

He says illusionists have always fascinated him, which is one of the reasons for him choosing Mandrake. "And the place he lives in, Xanadu, atop a hill, is riddled with mysteries," he adds.

This is his first time dressing up for Comic Con and he's excited. "I wanted to dress up as Deadpool, but that required more planning, so maybe next time," he says.

His friend Varun Rajagopalan, a freelance writer, has picked Obelix because "I'm a big guy and so is he". "This 'Asterix' series character is also very strong but doesn't know it and he's perpetually hungry. These are the things I like about him," he adds.

"I had to buy the striped fabric for the chest-high pants and get them stitched. I also bought orange yarn which I've braided and I'll probably rent the steel helmet," he says, adding that although he wore this for the cosplay last year he's repeating it as he missed out on all the fun back then.

Business consultant Sunil Anand has grown a beard for Captian Haddock from the 'Tintin' series. "But I don't think it's long enough," he quips. "And I'll probably have to rent one anyway." He has already bought a black sailor's jacket and hat as well as a blue t-shirt.

Next year, he will probably be the Marvel supervillain Kingpin. "I'll have to start planning early as it'll need a white tux," he offers.

For Sneha Alice Arun, a graphic designer, this is her second year cosplaying and she has the zeroed in on 'SpongeBob' character DoodleBob.

"I have to decide which the other one will be. So far, my options are Shego from 'Kim Possible', Jigsaw from the movies and Mermaid Man, again from the 'SpongeBob' series," she says. "Last year, I dressed up as Chun li from the 'Street Fighter' series and Rin Okumura from the anime series 'Ao no Exorcist'," she says. She's making the costumes herself "with a lot of craft materials from here and there". "It's a lot of work, but it's worth it. I love these characters and getting to be them for even one day and having people think of me as them feels great," she says.

Anahita Ananth, a student, has a bunch of friends cosplaying this year and she wanted to join them too.

"But unlike them, I had exams and couldn't plan for it," she says. So instead, she's going with a Goth look, an all-black outfit matched with black lipstick.
