Vacation is not just about chilling. It could be about stretching every sinew and revelling in the high adrenaline rush. There are many families and youngsters who plan adventure-based vacations which include trekking, river rafting, hiking, rock climbing and other forms of extreme activities.
This, they say, not only satiates their thirst for adventure but also helps them overcome fear and handle any challenging situation.
Geeta Bisht works as a senior server engineer with Fidelity National Financial.
Her tight work schedule doesn't permit her to travel as much as she would like to, but she makes it a point to make short trips at least once a month. And almost all her trips are planned around adventure activities like paragliding, canoeing, river rafting and kayaking.
She also goes on treks and does rock climbing whenever she gets a chance.
"I am basically a runner, so whenever I decide to take a vacation, I first pack my running shoes along with my hiking and climbing gear. This is because I feel that I explore places better on foot than in a vehicle," she says.
Geeta adds that she is also fond of hiking and bouldering (which is a form of rock climbing).
"When travelling, I have tried out so many activities that I have never heard of before and one of them is bouldering. And now, I select places where I get to do bouldering," she adds.
It is the very thought of getting away from the bustling city life that prompts Suchithra, a senior legal counsel, to consciously plan a holiday around adventure.
"My vacations are always planned around trekking, paragliding and scuba diving. Adventure-based trips are like meditation for me. They give me a better idea about the world around me,"
says Suchithra, who has done trekking in Karnataka, Kerala and Maharashtra.
She has also been to the Everest base camp. "I have climbed Mt Elbrus in Europe, Mt Kosciuszko in Australia, Mt Kilimanjaro in Africa, and Mt Fuji in Japan," she elaborates.
She adds, "My dream is to climb the highest mountain in every country."
For Pinky Garg, taking a vacation means a chance to get out of familiar surroundings. Pinky is a voice-over artiste who works from home.
"I think all my vacations till date have included some kind of adventure-based activity. As a family, we enjoy extreme sports. So river rafting, bungee jumping and paragliding top the list of must-do things. This kind of a vacation not only helps you burn all the extra energy, but also leaves you feeling positive," says Pinky.
It is the urge to explore the lesser known spaces that inspires Vikram, an employee with Talent Edge, to club vacations with extreme adventure based activities.
"Taking part in adventurous activities helps one overcome fears. The first time we went river rafting, we were all really scared to get into the water. But after a while, it was a smooth sail because the water wasn't as aggressive as we thought it would be," says Vikram.
"We went river rafting during a family vacation to Kushalnagar. I recently went on a trek to Turahalli forest. When you stand at the highest point in this forest, you see the city on one side and the vast stretch of greenery on the other. And this is true bliss for me," says Vikram.
